Chipotle Quesadilla Calories: Why It's the Most Caloric Item on the Menu

Part of our Chipotle Menu With Calories hub — How many calories is each way of ordering — burrito, bowl, tacos, salad, quesadilla?

The quesadilla is Chipotle's quiet heavyweight. The folded tortilla plus a triple portion of melted Monterey Jack starts you at roughly 950 calories before you pick a protein. Add chicken and the standard chicken quesadilla lands around 1,180 calories — and that's before the three included sides (rice, salsa, sour cream can push a full meal past 1,500).

Why the Quesadilla Beats the Burrito (Calorically)

A loaded burrito can out-calorie a quesadilla, but ingredient for ingredient the quesadilla is denser. The reason is cheese portioning: a burrito gets one scoop of cheese (110 calories); the quesadilla gets roughly three portions, melted into the tortilla. You can't ask for "light cheese" in any meaningful way — the cheese is the item. Compare that to a bowl, where dairy toppings are optional line items you control one by one.

The Included Sides Are Not Free

A quesadilla meal comes with your choice of three sides. The default picks — rice (210), sour cream (110) and tomato salsa (25) — add ~345 calories. Swap to the light build: fresh tomato salsa, green salsa and lettuce, and the sides total under 50.

Ordering a Lighter Quesadilla

There's no truly light quesadilla, but the damage-control version is fajita veggie with salsa-only sides at roughly 1,020 calories total — treat it as your whole day's biggest meal. If you want melted cheese energy at half the cost, a bowl with queso (120 cal) and cheese (110) gets you the flavor at 600–700 total. See also the tortilla math that drives most of this number.
